$500 First Prize in essay contest!

PFLAG Austin Deidre Furr Essay Prize is an annual LGBTQ themed essay contest in honor of Deirdre Furr, a Language Arts teacher at Georgetown High School who founded the districts first Gay Straight Alliance. 

This year the contest is open to high school students enrolled in the following ISDs: Georgetown,  Leander, Round Rock, Pflugerville, and Austin.  Students from Wimberley, Killeen ISDs are also eligible.

This year's essay subject is: "Texas' proposed SB242 law forbids schools from withholding a student's information, even if the student has requested privacy, thus possibly outting an LGBTQ student to their parents.  Why is SB242 good or bad?"

Contest deadline was March 1, 2017.

Judges have judged the essays and we have the winners.  They are, in no particular order:

Winners was announced at the awards ceremony, Thursday March 23rd, 7pm, at the Prothro Atrium at Southwestern University, 1001 E University Ave, Georgetown, TX 78626
