Deirdre Furr made her mark on the world as a daughter, mother, friend and teacher. She taught English Language Arts at Georgetown High School for twelve years. She was a dynamic and outstanding teacher who was well loved and respected by her students and fellow teachers. Ms. Furr had a gift for engaging her students in the subject matter, and was innovative in using technology as a teaching tool.  In addition to her excellent teaching, she founded Georgetown High School’s first Gay Straight Alliance. Ms. Furr cared very much about creating a safe and accepting environment for all students. She never gave up on her students, treating them all as her own.  She will always be missed by the Georgetown community.PFLAG Austin hopes to honor Deirdre Furr’s memory with this annual essay contest.
