2016 Deidre Furr Essay Contest
The Deirdre Furr essay competition is an annual LGBTQ themed essay competition in honor of Deirdre Furr, a Language Arts teacher at Georgetown High School who founded the districts first Gay Straight Alliance.
The theme for the 2015-2016 school year was "Why should the laws be changed to guarantee that transgender people have total equal rights (employment, housing, public accommodations, etc.) compared to the rights of everyone else?"
The 2016 competition was open to high school students enrolled in Independent School Districts of Georgetown, Leander, and Austin. Essays were due March 1st, 2016.
There was broad participation from all eligible school districts. The quality and quantity of essays submitted surpassed all expectations! We had one winner from each of the three school districts! The winning essays were:
